Cloud computing is hot. But here’s an interesting article about the cloud model versus the downloadable / behind-the-firewall model that concludes that there are still arguments for downloadable and self-hosted software, chief being control.
And this one is about a cloud-based web app development platform which went under:
In my opinion that’s one of the major downsides to cloud computing. You need to make absolutely sure that you are entrusting your application to a solid provider who isn’t going to disappear on you. In the case of Coghead, a lot of Web application developers developed apps on their platform and they and their clients were left in the lurch when it went under. Its assets and technology were actually bought by SAP, but SAP didn’t agree to assume any of Coghead’s “customer obligations.”
It’s still a bit of a wild west. Our recommendation: stay with the big name cloud service providers for now.
